Alzheimer News

In 1906, a German psychiatrist Dr. Alois Alzheimer recognized a degenerative mental disorder which is now known after his name as Alzheimer’s disease. Presently, Alzheimers is known to one of the leading causes of deathe worldwide and hence has become one of the biggest news topics for the news over the globe. Some of the alzheimer news is as follows:

News about Alzheimers gene

  • Early-onset

There are some occurrences where early-onset Alzheimers disease, also known as Familial Alzheimers disease, has been inherited from one of the parents. This disease is caused by different gene mutations of chromosomes like 1, 14 and 21, due to formations of some abnormal proteins. The mutations on chromosome 21 are responsible for over generation of a protein called beta-amyloid.

  • Late-onset

alzheimer news

Most of the Alzheimers cases are of the late-onset Alzheimers which develops after the age of 60 years. As per the news, no specific gene has been identified as being responsible for causing late-onset Alzheimer’s but there is one gene that has been identified as a risk gene for Alzheimer, this is called as apolipoprotein E-e4 commonly known as APOE-e4 which is found on the chromosome 19. APOE-e4 holds the information about the formations of a protein called tau which helps to carry cholesterol and other material in the bloodstream.

About ALzheimers and beta amyloid

An immunization strategy targeting beta amyloid 42, or a second form known as Abeta40, has prevented the deposition of amyloid in young mice suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. But, this strategy was ineffective in altering amyloid deposition or clearance in the mice with modest levels of pre-existing amyloid deposits.

Alzheimers and tau

Newsers from University of Minnesota Medical School have recently published a report which says that some form of tau protein is responsible for the cell death and not the tangles formed by it. If the proportion of tau is reduced or stopped, even when the tangles are present, memory of the engineered mice prone to Alzheimer’s shows an improvement.

Alzheimers and APP

There is again a difference of opinion as to whether amyloid causes the disease or whether it is simply a symptom of the disease downstream from the original cause.  Researchers from Jacksonville have submitted a report with verification which suggests that prevention of beta amyloid deposition in the brain prior to the onset of Alzheimer’s may be easier than curing them after the disease becomes complex.

Gender and Alzheimer news

News shows that presently, number of women suffering from Alzheimers is higher than the number of men suffering from Alzheimers. An appropriate explanation to this is that normal life expectancy of women is higher than that of men. Alzheimers is a slow progressing disease which starts developing in women in their old age and men generally don’t live long enough to let the progress of Alzheimers be noticeable.

Alzheimer disease news on the cure

  • Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is an antioxidant from the Chinese ginkgo biloba tree. News shows that the ginkgo biloba extract EGB 761 has effects like Aricept, Cognex, and Exelon which are usually subscribed to the patients suffering from mild to moderate Alzheimers disease. It is a blood thinner hence dosages of any other blood thinning agents will have to be reduced accordingly.

  • Huperzine A

Huperzine A is again a remedy with chemical properties similar to the drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Alzheimers patients.

  • Choline

A compound involved in the synapse between the cells, nerve impulse transmission, fat metabolism as well as the cell wall membranes. It is thought that choline might help to improve the memory, but report, yet, do not show any benefit to Alzheimer’s patients.

  • Phosphatidylserine

It is a building block for the neurons in the brain cells and thus it was thought to use phosphatidylserine as supplements to reverse the impairment in Alzheimer’s disease. In depth news is still required before this can be considered as a practical treatment.

  • Vinpocetine

A derivative of the periwinkle plant, it increases flow of blood to the brain and also improves the blood circulation. Studies prove that it improves cognitive impairment after some prolonged use.

Alzheimers disease, until now, is incurable. Though alzheimer news is going on to find the proper treatment to halt the disease but scientists recommend a healthy life style, Proper diet and regular exercise – physical and mental – to prevent this disorder.

Note: Discuss dietary supplements with a certified medical practitioner before consumption, to ensure their safety.
