Alzheimer Disease Treatment

Alzheimer is a form of dementia, a disease characterized by decline in mental health and the ability to remember, learn, communicate and judge. Alzheimer is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer is also a brain disorder with a progressive form and with no cure at all. Reversing of the Alzheimer condition is not possible and most of the time dementia is triggered due to Alzheimer.

Alzheimer disease is a life threatening disorder and accounts for significant number of deaths over the globe. There may not be a reversal treatment available to the disease, but Alzheimer disease treatment includes symptom management and arresting the fast progression of the nerve cell damage to increase the life expectancy. The treatment of the disorder may be varying according to the cognitive or the behavioral symptoms. Regular exercises, balanced and good nutrition may be helpful to a patient with Alzheimer disease to act independently and carrying out the daily activities.

Causes of Alzheimer Disease:

Death of the nervous cells that communicate with each other to handle the nervous system and other brain activities causes Alzheimer disease. This is a degenerative, progressive and irreversible cognitive disorder. Death of the cells form plaques and also tangles in some of the regions in the brain that hinder its normal functionality.

Some of the research studies indicate that the disease has a genetic background and a mutation in genes cause excessive production of ABeta protein in the brain. However, for the people who develop this disease without any genetic mutation or a sporadic form have a tendency of lack of removal of the ABeta protein from the brain again leading to Alzheimer disease.

Risk Factors of Alzheimer Disease:

  • Growing Age – Age factor is the biggest and significant risk factor of the disease. The statistics state that over 10% of people over the United States, have Alzheimer disease and the percentage reaches at 50% for the people who have crossed their 85th birthday. So there are only half of the people over the age of 90, who are not affected by Alzheimer disease.
  • High Blood Pressure – Although, it is related to heart, but does hamper the brains functionality as well and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
  • Diabetes, coronary artery disorders and Down syndrome are also some of the diseases that may trigger the onset of Alzheimer disease at an early age of around 40 years.

Treatment Plan Alzheimer Disease:

Treatment Plan of the disease depends on various factors. Although, there is no particular medication to stop the degeneration of nerve cells, but certainly it can be slowed down. Following are the factors considered while preparing the treatment plan:

  • The treatment varies according to the cognitive or behavioral symptoms. Cognitive symptoms imply the defects in the thought process, decision-making power, memory, or language learning. Behavioral symptoms may be depression, suspicion or agitation.
  • Age factor of the patient also is studied for a better treatment plan
  • Other factors for treatment include patient’s health, medical history, culture and resistance to medications and the extent of disease plays important role to identify the preferred.

Alzheimer Disease Treatment:

  • Cholinesterase Inhibitors – These medications are used to facilitate the elevation of acetylcholine that is important to aid learning and improve memory. Also, this medicine curbs the progression of symptoms in people, who are administering the medication for a prolonged time of a year or half.
  • Razadyne – This medicine is administered for mild to severe levels of Alzheimer disease. This medicine is available in tablet, capsule and liquid form. However, the administration of the medicine has several side effects such as diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue and vomiting.
  • Cognex – This medication is amongst the first drugs that were approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of benign to moderate level of the disease. However, it is not often used to treat the disease nowadays, as there are many advanced medicines available in the market.
  • Namenda – This medicine is used to treat the disease in a different manner, by regulating the glutamate chemical. This chemical is effective in improving in memory and aiding learning. Hence, it works as a protective drug that curbs degeneration of brains cells and improvise the mental function.

Alzheimer disease treatment is dependent on the symptoms of the disease. However, the disease is irreversible and non-curable. It is common with growing age and affects the patient’s ability to manage the daily work and learning abilities. Genetic cell mutation is studied as a reason for the disease to trigger. The protective treatment to curb the progression and changing environment to treat the behavioral symptoms is effective.
