Alcoholic GastritisAlcoholic Gastritis is a condition which occurs due to heavy drinking. Frequent drinking can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen. When an individual is addicted to drinking, the walls of the stomach get inflamed and might bleed. In other words, alcoholic gastritis is an inflammation in the lining of the stomach. It is caused due to indigestion in the stomach. This problem can be diagnosed by means of laboratory examinations.

If an individual develops alcoholic gastritis, then it can lead to chronic condition and if not cured leads to acute condition, thereby leading to death. In the longer run, patient will feel a constant pain in the abdomen along with the feeling of bloating. So they need to immediately rush to the doctor and prescribe some medicines which will help to reduce the pain.

Signs and symptoms of alcoholic gastritis

Following are the signs and symptoms of alcoholic gastritis:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Causes of alcoholic gastritis

There are some of the causes of alcoholic gastritis, which includes:

  • Helicobacter pylori- It is a bacteria that is present in the mucous lining of the stomach. It causes a low-level inflammation of the stomach. Over 80% of people are infected with this bacterium.
  • Pernicious anemia- It occurs when the stomach lacks a natural substance which is needed for the digestion and absorption of food molecules. It is caused by loss of gastric parietal cells.
  • Bile reflux- It is the backflow of bile from the small intestine into the stomach and esophagus. The main causes of bile reflux are peptic ulcer and gallbladder surgery
  • Infection- Infection can be bacterial, fungal and viral. These infections can lead to many types of problems.

Diagnostic tests

Some tests are performed to diagnose gastritis.

  1. Endoscopy- Endoscopy is a procedure which includes a thin tube with a camera inserted at the end, which is used to check for stomach lining inflammation.
  2. Biopsy- Biopsy is a procedure which involves the removal of tissues which is observed under microscope.
  3. Stool test- It checks the color of the stool. It can cause problem if the stool is dark or bloody.

Problems of drinking too much alcohol

Following are the problems caused due to excessive use of alcohol

  • Liver disease
  • Mental health problem
  • Damage nervous tissue
  • High blood pressure
  • Alcohol dependence

Treatments for alcoholic gastritis

There are certain treatments for alcoholic gastritis, which includes:

  • Taking antacids and drugs to reduce stomach acid
  • Avoid drinking alcohol
  • Do not keep the stomach empty
  • Avoid smoking cigarette

Dietary care for gastritis

The diet of the gastritis patient includes food which can be easily digested. The patient is recommended to take meal at regular intervals of time. He should take fat free food and keep the intake of milk and skimmed milk preparations. Puddings, breads, bagels and pretzels should also be used. All types of fruits such as pears, oranges, apple, sweet limes, watermelons, etc must be consumed. Green vegetables, wheat bran, unpolished rice, vegetable salad, coconut water, and low dairy foods should also be taken.

Alcoholism is one of the common causes of gastritis. Light use of alcohol can cause stomach ulcer. Hangover, headache, dizziness, and fatigue are some of the side-effects of excessive use of alcohol. Gastritis is very common in alcoholic people, as it is triggered by digestive system disorder. If a person is suffering from alcoholic gastritis, he should take some precautionary measures, as prescribed by the doctor. This problem should not be taken lightly, as it can lead to erosive gastritis.
