Hyperopia and Astigmatism
Hyperopia and astigmatism, both are errors of refraction. Imagine absolute vision loss to a certain degree of disturbance in vision. One may feel better to have some erroneous vision than no vision at all. However, the errors in refraction may rarely lead to complete blindness, but can certainly hamper it to an extreme level. The vision difficulty in refraction is due to the light rays not focusing on the exact retina and rather focusing elsewhere. Vision of the hypoeropes is termed as farsighted vision, wherein they can see a distant object very clearly, while being unable to see the closer details. Astigmatism is a condition, where a person may have blurring vision due to inefficacy of the optics of eye to focus image sharply onto the retina. Hyperopia is usually present since the birth, whereas, astigmatism may be acquired over a period of time.
Causes of hyperopia:
This vision difficulty is a result of light rays focusing outside the retina, rather than exactly on it. Also, another common cause for the condition may lie in the structure of the eye. In case the eyeball is too short, than a normal eye then such a disorder may be present. However, there may be confusion in presbyopia condition and hyperopia. Presbyopia is an abstract of hyperopia, which onsets due to aging.
Causes of astigmatism:
This disorder results due to presence of two different focal points. Hence, even if one of the focal points reaches exactly to the retina while not the other then, it may create vision differences and difficulties in viewing fine details of an object in vision field. Astigmatism can further be a hyperopic astigmatism. Such a condition is characterized by both the focal points dropping outside the retina. Prevalence of such a condition may develop with age. However, no certain cause is understood for its cause.
Symptoms of hyperopia:
Farsighted people may commonly complain about constant headache or eyestrain while performing any close visual task. Eye fatigue, blurring vision, and problem in adjusting to near vision may also onset as few general symptoms for the problem.
Symptoms of astigmatism:
People with this disorder will experience distorted vision regardless to the distance. However, if the disorder is in its early stage, a minute observation would be required to gaze the odd vision. Difficulty in focusing, difficulty while reading, squinting off eyes to view clearly and excessive tearing in eyes while concentrating on close details or distant objects are some common symptoms associated with the refractive error of astigmatism.
Treatment for hyperopia and astigmatism:
The most common treatment available for addressing any refractive error is corrective prescription glasses or contact lenses. Hyperopia or astigmatism is no exception to it. However, there are some cases where the degree of the refractive error is too high or the person has intolerance to contact lenses. In such cases, person either has to manage with eyeglasses or has to look for refractive error correction surgeries. There are various laser invasive surgeries such as LASIK, or implanting contact lens surgery, which can reinstate the normal refraction power of the eyes. Nevertheless, people prefer eyeglasses or contact lenses to the surgical options to avoid the risk of complications arising due to surgeries.
Precaution for hyperopia and astigmatism:
Precaution for any refractive error may lie in comprehensive eye examinations at regular intervals to catch any minute change in the vision. Also, a healthy diet rich in eye-health enriching vitamins will help prevent any refractive error and if present then the progress may be arrested.
Hyperopia and astigmatism are errors in the refraction. Such condition is a result of incorrect focal point causing visual disturbances. To reinstate the normal vision, it is important to diagnose the problem and seek expert advice to correct the disorder. Hyperopia is common as compared to astigmatism. Corrective lenses are the initial resolution for refractive problems. Convex contact lenses may be used to help the focal point drop on retina in case of hyperopia. However, if the problem is a result of complication of any other related problem, then the underlying cause should be treated to correct the condition. There are surgeries available to correct refractive errors. The use of surgeries or corrective lenses can restore close to normal vision in a person with hyperopia or astigmatism.
