Protein is an extremely essential nutrient. The food which we eat contains proteins and is absorbed from the food through the process of digestion and is used to build different tissues and also to improve the texture of the hair. It is difficult for the body to break down the protein into small molecules so that it becomes digestible. There is a kind of protein called the Whey protein that is high quality protein and is found naturally in the cow’s milk. The buffalo’s milk contains lactose which many find difficult to digest which is termed as being intolerant to the lactose. This intolerance is due to the absence of the lactase. Thus drinking cow’s milk is beneficial for the people who are lactose intolerant. The whey protein is a complete protein containing all the amino acids that your body needs. Incomplete protein digestion whether it is lactose or the Whey leads to the bloating and gas formation. There are overall 22 types of the amino acids. Each of these has their own characteristics. Out of these only eight are essential amino acids. The proteins are used up most of the time by the hormones secreted from the various glands -thyroxin from the thyroid, insulin from the pancreas, and a variety of the hormones come from the pituitary glands that are the soft tissues. . These require the richest content of protein to remain healthy.
The incomplete digestion of the proteins can lead to the following symptoms in the body.
1. Bloating: it is a feeling of the fullness, swelling, and gas in the abdomen. Bloating happens due to the gases which are not passed through belching or flatulence which then build up in the intestine and the stomach. The bloating is often followed by the abdominal pain either mild or dull or sharp and intense. The pain will be relieved by passing the gas.
2. Gas: Everyone has it and passes it in some or the other form. Some pass it through the mouth in the form of burping while some pass it through the anus. Most people produce about 1-4 pints a day and pass gas about 14 times a day. Gas is basically from the air that you swallow and the breakdown of the undigested food by the bacteria in the large intestine.
3. Considerations: The protein that is not broken down properly can lead to the indigestion causing bloating and gas. The whey protein, if is in a concentrated dairy form then many people with even intolerance to the dairy products can lead to bloating as a reaction.
The prevention of protein bloating is that most of the people tolerate whey protein but the high doses can cause increased bloating and gas. In order to treat or avoid the discomfort, get rid of the habit of overeating. Start with a diet journal and maintain a dairy which will contain what you have eaten daily and or even for a week and note down when you experienced a feeling of fullness and discomfort.
